Rainey Street: The Bungalow Bar District
Rainey Street turned old Eastside bungalows into bars, and the result is unlike any bar district in the country. It’s walkable, the patios are massive, and the drinks flow easy.
Victory Lap is rated 4.9 and brings a sports bar energy to Rainey without the sad-wings-and-screens vibe. Great cocktails, big TVs, and a patio that feels like a backyard party.
Half Step is the cocktail bar on Rainey that takes its drinks seriously. The bartenders are legitimately talented, the menu changes with the seasons, and the backyard stage hosts live music that ranges from jazz to blues.
Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden has 100+ taps, a sausage menu a foot long, and a beer garden with a live music stage. It’s basically a Texas beer hall, and it’s magnificent. The brisket sausage with a local IPA is the move.
Bar Hacienda on Rainey blends Mexican-inspired cocktails with a rooftop terrace. Rated 4.8, the margaritas are fresh-squeezed and the mezcal selection runs deep.
East Austin: The Creative Core
East Austin is where the city’s artistic and entrepreneurial energy concentrates. The bars here reflect that — creative, independent, and unpredictable.
Whisler’s on East 6th is Austin’s cocktail temple. The main bar does seasonal cocktails beautifully, and upstairs, Mezcalería Tobalá serves mezcal in an intimate loft space. The back patio with Thai food from Thai-Kun is a perfect Austin evening.
The Lost Well on Airport Blvd is a metal bar — literally. Skulls on the walls, heavy music on the stereo, and a patio with a fire pit. Rated 4.8, it’s the kind of bar that doesn’t exist in most cities anymore.
Nickel City is a dive bar with great cocktails, which is a trick not many places can pull off. Named after Buffalo’s nickname (the owners are from there), it’s got a pool table, cheap beer, and bartenders who can make you a proper Manhattan.
Seven Spirits is a newer addition that earned a 4.7 rating fast. Seven base spirits, each featured in a dedicated section of the menu. It’s educational without being nerdy.
South Congress: The Postcard Strip
South Congress is Austin’s most photographed street, and the bars here match the energy — cool, eclectic, and worth the premium.
The Continental Club is a live music venue that’s been here since 1955. No cover most nights, incredible local bands, and a dance floor that’s seen more boot-scooting than any bar in Austin. This is the real deal.
C-Boy’s Heart & Soul is the Continental Club’s neighbor and spiritual sibling. Blues, soul, and funk seven nights a week. The vibe is sweaty and loud and perfect.
South Congress Hotel Lobby Bar is surprisingly good for a hotel bar. The cocktails are well-made, the space is beautiful mid-century design, and it’s a civilized place to start before things get rowdy.
Downtown & West 6th: Controlled Chaos
Dirty 6th (the eastern blocks of East 6th Street downtown) is Austin’s Bourbon Street — cheap drinks, loud music, sticky floors. Fun in doses. West 6th and the surrounding blocks have more refined options.
Midnight Cowboy is a reservation-only speakeasy in a former massage parlor. Ring the buzzer, give your name, and enter one of Austin’s best cocktail bars. The drinks are exceptional and the setting is intimate.
The Roosevelt Room on West 5th is where Austin’s cocktail bartenders go to drink. The menu is organized by era — pre-Prohibition, Golden Age, Modern — and every drink is meticulously researched and executed.
In Plain Sight on Brazos is a 4.9-rated speakeasy that actually earns the hidden-bar hype. The cocktails are Latin American-inspired and the space feels like a private club in Mexico City.
Elephant Room is Austin’s jazz club — a basement venue on Congress Ave where live jazz happens every night. The drinks are simple, the cover is cheap, and the music is world-class.
The Domain: North Austin’s Surprise
Corinne at The Domain is rated 4.9 and proves that suburban-adjacent bars can have soul. Elegant cocktails, beautiful space, and the kind of service that makes you forget you’re near a shopping center.
Practical Tips
Best nights: Wednesday and Thursday have the best music lineups without the weekend crush. During SXSW and ACL, all bets are off.
Dirty 6th vs. Rainey: Dirty 6th is college bars. Rainey is late 20s/30s. West 6th is somewhere between. East 6th past I-35 is the locals’ choice. Pick your vibe.
Getting around: Austin traffic is brutal. Uber is king. If you’re on Rainey, you can walk to downtown. Otherwise, budget 15-20 minutes between neighborhoods.
Budget: Cocktails are $12-16, beer is $6-8. Austin is still cheaper than NYC or LA, but it’s climbing fast. Happy hours are generous.
Live music: Every bar has live music, but the best is free. Continental Club, C-Boy’s, and The Far Out Lounge rarely charge cover.
