Great Lakes Brewing Company
Ohio City — The brewery that proved Cleveland could make world-class beer. The brewpub in Ohio City is an institution — the bar still has bullet holes from Eliot Ness’s era (allegedly). Order: Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, one of the best porters in America, on its home turf.
The Spotted Owl
Tremont — A cocktail bar in a former corner store that combines neighborhood warmth with serious drink-making. The menu balances classics and originals, and the bartenders are happy to go off-menu. Order: their take on a Penicillin or a spirit-forward stirred drink.
Porco Lounge and Tiki Room
Clark-Fulton — A tiki bar run by one of Cleveland’s most passionate rum enthusiasts. The cocktails are well-crafted, the décor is immersive, and the rum list could keep you busy for months. Small and often packed. Order: a Zombie or whatever limited rum they’ve just cracked open.
Prosperity Social Club
Tremont — A retro-styled bar and restaurant in a converted social club space. The pierogies are excellent, the cocktails are solid, and the vintage bowling-alley-meets-diner aesthetic is uniquely Cleveland. Order: a Great Lakes draft and an order of pierogies. This is Cleveland — it’s mandatory.
Nano Brew Cleveland
Ohio City — A brewpub connected to the West Side Market, making it the perfect post-market stop. Small-batch beers brewed on-site, solid pub food, and a casual vibe. Order: whatever experimental batch is on — they brew in small enough quantities that the lineup changes constantly.
The Happy Dog
Gordon Square — A bar famous for its build-your-own hot dogs (50+ toppings) and eclectic live music calendar. The toppings list includes things like Froot Loops and peanut butter — it’s a choose-your-own-adventure. Order: a hot dog with at least five toppings and a local craft beer.
Bookhouse Brewing
Ohio City — A book-themed brewery in a cozy Ohio City space. The beers are clean, balanced, and thoughtfully made. Grab a book off the shelf and settle in. Order: whatever lager or saison they have on — they do subtle, drinkable styles well.
Society Lounge
Downtown — An upscale cocktail lounge downtown with craft cocktails and a whiskey-forward menu. The interior is sleek and the drinks are precise. Good date spot. Order: an Aviation or their whiskey sour — the citrus work is dialed in.
Ohio City is the must-visit neighborhood — the brewery and bar density around West 25th Street is walkable and excellent. Tremont is more intimate and neighborhood-feeling. Gordon Square is the artsy pick. Downtown has improved but still relies on a few standout spots rather than full strips. Cleveland bars close at 2:30 AM.
