Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge
Walker’s Point — Operating since 1938, Bryant’s has no written menu. You tell the bartender what flavors you like, and they build something on the spot. The ice cream drinks are legendary — this is not the place for cocktail snobbery. Order: an ice cream drink. Pick your flavor and let them surprise you.
At Random
Bay View — The sister bar to Bryant’s, At Random is a mid-century time capsule with tiki-adjacent drinks and vintage booths lit by candles. Cash only. The cocktails come in sizes from regular to fishbowl. Order: a Pink Squirrel or a Grasshopper — the frozen classics are the move here.
Wolski’s Tavern
Brady Street — If you’ve ever seen a bumper sticker that reads “I Closed Wolski’s,” you know this place. Open until 5 AM (2:30 on weekdays), this Brady Street dive is where Milwaukee nights go to finish. Order: a beer and a bump. Then earn your bumper sticker.
Lakefront Brewery
Beerline B — The brewery tour here is widely considered one of the best in the country — energetic, funny, and generous with samples. The beer hall overlooks the Milwaukee River and serves excellent fish fry on Fridays. Order: Riverwest Stein amber lager, Milwaukee’s unofficial house beer.
The Palm Tavern
Bay View — A tropical-themed bar in Bay View with inventive cocktails, natural wines, and a patio that becomes prime real estate in summer. The vibe is chill but the drinks are carefully made. Order: a daiquiri variation or whatever tropical special they’re running.
Drink Wisconsinbly Pub
Third Ward — A love letter to Wisconsin drinking culture, complete with brandy old fashioneds (the state drink, essentially), cheese curds, and Packers gear on every surface. It’s self-aware and genuinely fun. Order: a brandy old fashioned sweet — the Wisconsin way, with Korbel and a cherry.
Boone & Crockett
Walker’s Point — A craft cocktail bar with a sprawling outdoor space on the waterfront. Summer weekends here are electric. The cocktail menu rotates seasonally and the bartenders are among the city’s best. Order: their seasonal punch or a well-made Negroni on the patio.
The Vanguard
Bay View — A sausage-and-cocktail bar that sounds odd on paper but executes brilliantly. House-made sausages, creative cocktails, and a punk-rock-meets-neighborhood-bar atmosphere. Order: the Cobra Verde sausage and a bourbon cocktail.
Burnhearts
Bay View — A Bay View institution known for its annual Mitten Fest (yes, in February, outdoors, in Milwaukee). Great tap list, killer Bloody Marys, and a patio that’s packed the moment temperatures crack 50°F. Order: a Bloody Mary with all the fixings — it’s practically a meal.
Milwaukee’s drinking geography centers on a few key strips: Bay View (KK Avenue is bar-hop heaven), Walker’s Point (cocktail-forward spots and LGBTQ+ nightlife), Brady Street (the classic going-out strip), and the Third Ward (more polished, weekend-brunch energy).
